Muddy Honest Note

I could write you a letter
draw the words into the ground
let the rain fall on top to never see,
and it'd still be so profound.

If you never saw it though
how would you ever really know
Mother nature wouldn't whisper nothin
my secret would never grow.

If I wrote you after the dew was down
The dirt would be real nice
I could scroll the letters into the ground
trace over it more than twice.

I'll wait a little longer
for the dirt to dry up tight
I'll watch the beetles crawl across the dust
and disappear into their flight.

From the hard dirt forms the letters
with a stick, I'd draw the lines
If it rained on that beautiful day
I'd just pretend I'd changed my mind.

I could write to you a letter
say the things I firmly hold
Tell you what I long to speak aloud
some honest words I've never told.

I could write it in the mud
with that stick I'd hold so tight
I could write it after a long hard rain
let it crust and dry through the night.

If you saw that letter
that I'd write into the ground
It would say, "I love you so"
in dried hard mud leaves swirling round.

What would you say in return
to a muddy honest note
a letter scribed into the ground
it is nothing really but some wet dirt.
